Best Candidates for IV Sedation

IV sedation is one of the many types of sedation available in Elyria, OH with Dr. Eric Guirguis, a sleep sedation dentist, and may be appropriate for you if you have moderate to severe levels of dental anxiety. You may be a good candidate for sleep dentistry if you have:

  • A high level of fear about going to the dentist
  • Limited time to complete your dental care plan
  • Complex dental problems
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Previous traumatic dental experiences
  • A fear of needles and shots
  • An aversion to being in a dental setting
  • Embarrassment about your teeth

How IV Sedation Works

IV sedation is administered intravenously and induces a state of deep relaxation. You are still able to speak and follow instructions, but you will not be very coherent and may not remember much from the procedure.

Dr. Guirguis has extensive experience administering sedatives intravenously, and we have found that this form of sedation is very effective for managing moderate to severe dental anxiety. It is not available at all dental offices in Elyria, but Dr. Guirguis has completed the advanced training and certification required by the state Board of Dental Examiners to provide this service to patients. If you have a very high level of fear and discomfort about going to the dentist, you may benefit from sleep dentistry services that alleviate anxiety and fear.

The drugs are administered directly into the bloodstream and take effect shortly after administration. You are monitored the entire time to ensure your blood oxygen level, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate remain stable. You will need someone to drive you home after your procedure.
